Navigating Industrial and Workplace Relations Changes in 2023

Workplace relations is full of complexities, and during 2023, a number of changes will come into effect. Employers therefore need to be across an ever changing and evolving way of managing their workforces.

The Fair Work Legislation Amendment (Secure Jobs, Better Pay) Act 2022 (Cth) (the ‘Amendment Act’) received Royal Assent on December 6, 2022 and amended the Fair Work Act 2009 (Cth), the main piece of employment legislation for private sector employers.

The Amendment Act changes workplace relations laws relating to bargaining, job security, gender equality, compliance and enforcement, workplace conditions and protections, and workplace relations institutions.

About Joanna Minchinton, GM Workplace Relations, People & Culture

Joanna is a recognised workplace relations expert, having been awarded life membership of both the Industrial Relations Society of Queensland; and Australian Labour and Employment Relations Association in recognition of her service to the field.

In her role with CCIQ, Joanna’s focus is on what businesses need to understand their obligations and responsibilities, and to work with them to achieve positive business outcomes.

Joanna provides practical, real-world advice and assistance on a wide range of business/employment matters, right through to providing formal representation in jurisdictions such as the Fair Work Commission, the QIRC, and the Queensland Human Rights Commission.

Joanna is an experienced trainer having delivered educational programs on a range of business topics for members and external organisations including international conferences delivered in Istanbul and Beijing.

She is also a regular guest lecturer to third year business students at Griffith University.

Prior to joining CCIQ, Joanna was the Employment Relations Manager with the Queensland Hotels Association. Other associations Joanna has worked with include the Australian Medical Association, both in the Brisbane branch office and Sydney branch office, and with the registered industrial union, ASMOFQ.

About Cletus Brown, Director Compliance Branch at Fair Work Ombudsman

 

Cletus Brown is a Director in the Compliance Branch at the Fair Work Ombudsman.

He has more than 25 years experience in the workplace relations field and has held managerial roles in key operational positions in all major reforms over the last 15 years including the introduction of WorkChoices, the Fair Work Act 2009 and the implementation of modern awards.

In his current role, Cletus leads two teams of Inspectors and another that manages Enforceable Undertakings and Compliance Partnerships. This work includes handling a number of the larger employers who are self-reporting underpayments to the workplace regulator.
