On The Couch With: Jack Hutchinson

Jack Hutchinson Jr has a bit more on his shoulders than your average 30-something-year-old. As a company director and the heir apparent of the three-billion-dollar revenue empire, Hutchinson Builders, taking over the family business means being the guardian of a multi-generational brand, not to mention being responsible for more than 10,000 people who work on a Hutchies site every day.

But the pressure to take over the family business, founded by his great, great grandfather 112 years ago, doesn’t keep Jack up at night. In fact, he is incredibly calm, even philosophical, about his current and future challenges.

Join journalist Kendall Gilding on the couch with Jack, as he shares business learnings spanning more than 100 years, including:

  • Establishing your own identity in a high-profile family business, and what it’s like to be groomed as the future Chairman.
  • Maintaining productivity and profits in the face of challenging conditions.
  • Balancing work and life as a young Dad.
  • Opportunities for women and progress towards gender balance in a male-dominated industry.
  • Giving back to the community which supports your commercial success.

This event will include a networking opportunity with food and beverages and a short Q&A with Jack.

About Jack Hutchinson (Jnr), Director, Hutchinson Builders

Jack is a director of Hutchinson Builders, one of Australia’s largest building companies which was founded in Brisbane in 1912.

Jack attended Brisbane Boys College before earning qualifications as a quantity surveyor and licensed builder. He interned for the family business as a contract administrator and then worked at a Sydney-based quantity surveying firm for several years before returning to Hutchies in 2019. Before being appointed as a Director two years ago, Jack worked across various project and operational roles within Hutchies, as well as within other property, construction, and financial firms in both Australia and the United Kingdom. Since joining the board, Jack has played an increasingly prominent role as a leader and spokesperson for the business.

Like his father, current Hutchies Chairman Scott Hutchinson, Jack has a passion for live music. Interestingly, he is also crazy about pinball. He was once ranked 7th in Australia and is a part of Netherworld, a bar and pinball arcade in Fortitude Valley.

Jack holds a Bachelor of Property (QS & CM) from Bond University, and he attained an MBA from the London Business School, where he met his Indonesian-born wife Fatya Junissa Azlika. Jack and Fatya are proud new parents to their daughter Marianne, who was born in May last year.
